If Valerie Plante wins the Nov. 5 municipal election, the 'Denis Bonus' for cops will be a thing of the past — but Denis Coderre, the bonus' namesake, says no such bonus exists.
Plante made that announcement Monday morning.
Projet Montreal contends that police commanders get $9,000 to $12,000 extra if their officers hit certain targets, including handing out a certain number of tickets — but Coderre says the ticket quotas don't exist.
The bonus scheme for Montreal police officers was introduced by mayor Denis Coderre, to reward police commanders if their patrol officers meet their ticket quotas.
“If you take a look at it, there no such thing as quotas, so I don't know what they're talking about,” the mayor said.
Plante said she had documents suggesting that the "Denis Bonuses" — as the police union calls them — amounted to $350,000 in 2016.
“We believe that police officers should give tickets when it makes sense, not when there's money attached to that,” said Plante.
