National Assembly speaker Jacques Chagnon once again rose in the National Assembly Thursday to scold UPAC over its arrest three weeks ago of Chomedey MNA Guy Ouellette.
Ouellette was arrested on Oct. 25 by UPAC officials in connection with an ongoing UPAC investigation into an apparent media leak.
Ouellette, who left the Liberal caucus to sit as an independent, has yet to be charged with a crime, and has accused UPAC of trying to intimidate him as he was investigating collusion between police and Quebec's financial markets regulator, the AMF.
Chagnon says from now on, police forces should advise the Assembly before they move to arrest a sitting MNA.
The speaker also says the information on Ouellette's government-issued phone and computer is protected by parliamentary immunity.
Meantime, UPAC issued a statement Thursday afternoon, saying it was created to help protect the integrity of Quebec's institutions, including the National Assembly and its members.
UPAC, however, appears to reserve the right to move on anyone it feels may run counter to that goal.
