Hydro-Quebec wants to raise your bill - again - by 1.1% starting next April.
The power utility has made its annual request to the province's energy board for permission to hike rates.
David Murray, president of Hydro-Quebec Distribution said the 1.1% rate increase they're asking for falls below the current rate of inflation and it's the third consecutive year that's been the case.
In the past two years, Hydro asked for rate hikes of around 1.6% and 1.7% but the Energy Board only allowed permission to raise rates by 0.7%. both times.
Murray said the proposed increase for next year is actually lower because of high demand and recent mild winters.
But they still need to pay the increased costs of delivering the electricity.
"In the vegetation control programs, we will add more works to prevent power outages," said spokesman Louis-Olivier Batty.
"It's really to cover the cost to provide electricity service to Quebeckers."
Hydro argues they still offer the lowest electricity rates in North America.
If Hydro gets its way, it would mean about $5.65 extra a year for an apartment dweller; $17.80 more per year for the owner of a small house; $26.55 more a year for the owner of a medium-sized home; and about $36 more a year for the owner of a large house.
After public hearings, the energy board should render its decision next March.
