The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed last year's backup goalie Antti Niemi to a one-year, one-way deal worth $950,000.
The deal has an annual average value of $950,000 U.S.
Niemi was one of the few bright spots on a lacklustre Habs roster last season. With the Canadiens, he went 7-5-4 with a 2.46 goals-against average, and a .929 save percentage in 19 games.
Before being claimed by the Canadiens on waivers last November, he played a total of five games with the Penguins and Panthers, losing four of those games and posting a woeful 6.74 GAA and an .822 save percentage.
The 34-year-old Finn is the Canadiens' nominee for this season's Bill Masterton Trophy, awarded to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
He played for three other teams in his NHL career, winning a Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.
