The Quebec Court of Appeal last week ruled against hockey legend Guy Lafleur in his bid to be compensated for a 2008 arrest tied to testimony he gave at a bail hearing for his son Mark a few months earlier.
Lafleur is seeking $2 million from the Crown and a Montreal police officer, after he was charged with perjury during the proceedings in September 2007. His son Mark had faced a slew of charges including assault, forcible confinement and dangerous driving. The former Habs great was convicted of giving contradictory testimony — a decision which was overturned by the Court of Appeal in 2010.
The now 66-year-old Lafleur alleged the arrest and conviction tainted his reputation and caused him to lose out on lucrative endorsements.
In 2015, the Quebec Superior Court rejected Lafleur's claims, and also set a $750,000 limit for damages.
