A Laval man who police suspect perpetrated a so-called "grandparent scam" targeting seniors over the phone has turned himself into police.
Provincial police 39-year-old Nicolas Grenier turned up at the courthouse in Joliette on Tuesday to turn himself in, and was then brought before a judge to face fraud charges.
He remains behind bars until his next court appearance on Friday.
Grenier and another man, 34-year-old Adriano Pezzi, are suspected of orchestrating a phone scam which netted them $500,000 from seniors across Quebec.
They would apparently call seniors and pose as their grandsons, who were in trouble somewhere and needed money.
Police say they managed to get as many as 130 people to wire them anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 apiece.
Pezzi was arrested last week, while a manhunt was on for Grenier.
