The Couillard government released a draft of new regulations which will include measures to allow residents of long-term care facilities (CHSLD) to install surveillance cameras in their rooms with out requiring permission from the management or staff.
The rules stipulate that cameras can only be installed to ensure quality of care or if mistreatment of a resident is suspected.
The identities of the people captured by video will be kept private except in instances when an investigation is launched and all recorded video will be destroyed after use.
Patient's rights committees have long called for such measures, but unions are concerned about privacy issues.
The new regulations are expected to come into effect before the end of the year.
