Gord Downie is Canada's Newsmaker of the Year for 2017.
The late Tragically Hip frontman was chosen for the second consecutive year in a Canadian Press survey of news editors and broadcasters across the country.
He collected 53 per cent of the votes.
It puts him among a short list of prime ministers and athletes who have been selected more than once.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was second this year, garnering 13 per cent of the votes, while new NDP leader Jagmeet Singh finished third with 11 per cent.
Downie died of brain cancer in October, but he used every opportunity in his final months to speak out in support of Indigenous people in Canada.
He established the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund to provide small grants to, in part, promote Indigenous education in schools.
Meanwhile, a survey of francophone journalists responding to a Presse Canadienne survey chose Montreal mayor Valérie Plante as Newsmaker of the Year, by a wide margin — 62.5 per cent. Plante was a virtual unknown before winning the leadership of the Projet Montréal party in December 2016, and then proceeded to upset Denis Coderre in the Nov. 5 municipal election.
Montreal newspaper La Presse, for its part, chose disgraced Just for Laughs founder Gilbert Rozon, the subject of multiple sexual misconduct allegations, as its top newsmaker of 2017. Meanwhile, Gatineau-based newspaper Le Droit chose Justin Trudeau — its editor-in-chief reasoning that the Prime Minister's approval rating remains high after two full years in office, despite a handful of controversies.
