It looks like the man who was once dubbed the King of Laval will now have to do some serious time behind bars.
Radio-Canada is reporting that Gilles Vaillancourt's lawyers and the Crown have cut a deal which will see the former Laval mayor sentenced to six years behind bars.
He'll also have to pay back $9 million.
Vaillancourt was arrested by officers with Quebec's anti-corruption squad UPAC in early 2013. He was facing charges, along with several others, in connection with an elaborate — and long-standing — collusion and kickback scheme involving city contracts.
Vaillancourt was mayor of Laval from 1989 until he stepped down in 2012 under a cloud of suspicion.
