Gilles Vaillancourt, the one-time 'King of Laval' who is serving a six-year prison term for orchestrating a massive kickback scheme involving city contracts to construction and engineering firms, now has some of his freedom back.
The Parole Board has granted him day parole.
Vaillacourt was convicted and sentenced in December 2016 for running the scheme while serving as mayor of Laval over a 14-year period, from 1996 to 2010.
Earlier on Friday, Tony Accurso, the former construction boss accused of being in on the same scheme, had his fraud trial dramatically end in a mistrial at the Laval courthouse.
More coming.
