Former Montreal North mayor Gilles Deguire is waiving his right to a preliminary hearing in his sexual assault case.
He will go straight to trial instead.
He resigned his post as borough mayor on Jan. 7, when it was revealed he was under investigation on criminal charges unrelated to his position.
A few days later, he was arrested on charges of sexual assault and sexual touching of a minor under the age of 16.
He will return to court in November, at which time a trial date will be set.
The trial is expected to last no more than a couple of days.
Deguire spent 30 years as a Montreal police officer before being elected as mayor of Montreal North in 2009.
