Quebec's justice minister is thinking of taking steps to toughen up sanctions against doctors found guilty of sexual misconduct, according to La Presse.
This comes after the Quebec College of Physicians came out calling for changes to the law.
"I made some statements five years ago about sexual misconduct and I ask for a change," said the head of the order, Dr. Charles Bernard in an interview with CJAD 800 News.
"A lot of change were brought up but we are still facing problems with the sanctions."
Bernard sayid lawyers and the disciplinary committee are bound by jurisprudence. Dr. Roger Hobden was recently barred from practicing for 15 months for sexual relations with patients including a 17-year-old. In criminal court, it was even less.
"Nine months (in the community) is not very severe," said Bernard.
Bernard said he met with the justice minister yesterday. He said he likes the Ontario system where doctors guilty of sexual misconduct have their licences are revoked and can only reapply after five years.
"They have that sanction for many years now so maybe we can be inspired by that," said Bernard.
