About 125 firefighters were called out to the corner of Pie-IX Blvd. and Pierre-de-Coubertin Ave. on Thursday morning to battle a stubborn apartment blaze.
The Montreal fire department declared a general alarm for a fire that started in a kitchen in one of the apartments just after 9:30 a.m. and belched thick smoke into the air for several hours before firefighters were able to being the blaze under control.
The building is located across the street from the Pie-IX metro station, and Olympic Stadium. A busy stretch of Pie-IX Blvd. between Sherbrooke and Hochelaga Sts. had to be shut down for a time, complicating traffic in the area.
Several of the building's residents needed to be treated for smoke inhalation.
