Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the Montreal region.
Beginning on Wednesday and persisting for the rest of the week, it is unusually cold for the period between Christmas and the New Year.
An Environment Canada spokesperson Alex Parent said it's been more than 20 years since Quebec has been this cold at this time of year.
Parent said at this time in 1993, the same sort of cold was persistent in Quebec. But he said back then, it didn't last as long.
"It's really the span of [this] cold event that's going to mark the memories," he said.
It was, however, a little colder back on this day in 1993.
"On December 27, 1993, the maximum was only minus 24," he said. "We're five degrees warmer if I can use that term today."
This week the cold airmass and brisk winds in Montreal will continue to produce wind chill values ranging from minus 38 to minus 44.
Temperatures are expected to warm up gradually mid-next week.
