The four men found inside a shipping container at the Port of Montreal last week are seeking asylum in Canada.
The stowaways, who are in their 30s and 40s, appeared before a refugee board hearing on Monday.
During the hearing it was confirmed the men are originally from Georgia, and came to Canada willingly.
They will remain detained while the R.C.M.P. and Canada Border Services Agency continue to investigate their illegal entry and background.
A publication ban was placed on much of the hearing, including the identities of the four men and their reasons for fleeing their home.
The migrants were found on July 20 at about 7:00 A.M. by a security guard who heard cries for help and noticed a makeshift white flag being waved through a small hole in the container.
They're believed to have been inside for nearly three weeks, and were suffering from dehydration and heat stroke.
