Former general manager of the Quebec Nordiques Maurice Filion has died.
He was 85-years old.
A native of Montreal, Filion was hired by the Nordiques when the team was founded in 1972 and he quickly climbed from recruiter to head coach and eventually became general manager in the summer of 1974.
He made the transition to the NHL at the same time as the Nordiques following the collapse of the World Hockey Association in 1979.
Filion finally lost his position as GM in the summer of 1988, when he inherited the position as VP of hockey operations.
He left the Nordiques for good in the summer of 1990.
Filion remained involved in Quebec sports, serving as president of the Laval University football team and as a disciplinary prefect of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He retired in 2005.
Filion's cause of death was not known.
