The lawyer for former Montreal North Mayor Gilles Deguire says his client is feeling remorse and hints there could be a settlement in his sexual assault trial when it returns to court in December.
“We're dealing with a man that’s always been an outstanding citizen and who's extremely remorseful, who feels so much pain for what he's done. We've been in conversation with Me. Bergevin and Me. Blais, the Crown attorney, and I'm sure we can come to a conclusion that would be in the best interest of justice." said his attorney Frank Pappas.
The 67 year old Deguire was arrested last January and charged with sexually assaulting a minor, a girl under the age of 16.
Last month, Deguire waived his right to a preliminary hearing, opting to go straight to trail but his attorney told CTV Montreal on Monday that Deguire may choose to settle the case in front of a judge alone.
Prior to becoming borough mayor in 2009, Deguire was a police officer for 30 years.
He returns to court on December 1st.
