Several familes and other residents are unable to return home after flames tore through a small apartment building on Wolfe St. between Square Amherst and Sherbrooke St. a little after 7 p.m. on Saturday.
According to one witness who lives nearby, firefighters responded quickly to douse the flames.
A resident of the building that caught fire said neighbours rushed through the building knocking on doors as smoke began to billow and fill the hallways.
"There was smoke coming into my room, my neighbours knocked on my door and I left," he told CJAD 800 News.
Police closed Wolfe between Square Amherst and Sherbrooke for a time. Power was also cut to the area.
The fire department says one firefighter was injured, his hand cut from a broken window, but no occupants were injured.
Damage to the building is estimated at nearly $200,000.
