The arrival of thousands of asylum seekers to Quebec has the federal government providing compensation to residents who live near Roxham Road and who have faced many inconveniences as a result.
Ottawa has confirmed that 45 households will share roughly $405,000 in compensation.
More than 40,000 people have crossed the Canada-US border irregularly for about two years, the majority of whom arrived to Canada via Roxham Road in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle in Montérégie.
The ongoing presence of police officers, reception facilities, and the constant comings-and-goings have created tremendous change for residents.
Most of the households, 45 in total, which were affected by the disturbances received a lump sum payment from the federal government.
Eight households were to receive the maximum amount of $25,000 and the others, either $10,000 or $ 2,500.
The amount of compensation was determined by the location of the households.
