Motorists fed up with constant roadwork will get a little bit of a break on the aging Champlain Bridge in the coming year.
Officials gave a technical briefing Tuesday to explain what was done to maintain the bridge last year, and what will be done in the coming year.
They say there will be two major work blitzes on the Champlain in 2017, compared with six in 2016.
Last year, workers installed 90 reinforcement trusses to support the girders. They have to install 10 more, and that work is expected to be complete by February.
Officials insist the bridge will be safe until the new Champlain Bridge opens sometime in 2018. Until then, they say the bridge's weakest points are constantly monitored to ensure the bridge remains secure.
Meanwhile, on the Mercier bridge, officials say they don't see any work-related closures at all next year, since the next round of maintenance work is due to happen underneath the span. Last year, the bridge had to be shut down for a period of time while the roadway was completely resurfaced.
And on the Jacques-Cartier bridge, the work to be done there will be done mainly at night.
