An eight-year-old girl drowned when she slipped and fell into the Magog River on Sunday afternoon.
Police in Sherbrooke say the girl was walking along the edge of the river with five other children when she fell in and was swept away by the current.
The other kids, who ranged in age from 8 to 17, began searching while others ran for help.
Hydro-Quebec closed an upstream dam to lower water levels, and the girl's body was found a short time later. Efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.
It is the 35th drowning in Quebec this year, compared to 32 at this time last year.
