A 26-year-old man from Mississauga, Ont. pleaded guilty in a Montreal courtroom Monday relating to a drunk driving accident in NDG two years ago which left his girlfriend seriously injured.
He has also been charged with failing to assist an injured person after surveillance video showed he crossed St. Jacques St. after the accident to get some grub at a Tim Horton's.
One night in March 2017, Smith was driving a rental car when he lost control and hit a concrete median. He wasn't seriously hurt, but his girlfriend suffered a broken sternum.
Smith earned a one-year driving ban, a 90-day prison sentence to be served non-consecutively, probation and must perform 240 hours of community service. In court, he expressed remorse for his stunning lack of judgment on the night of the accident and, according to his lawyer, has been attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
As for the girlfriend, she has now recovered completely from the accident. She remains with Smith, and the couple have since had a child together.
