After today's fiery crash on Highway 40 in the West Island that was likely caused by a truck driver falling asleep at the wheel, Quebec's auto insurance board warning how deadly drowsy driving can be.
One in five deadly accidents on Quebec roads happen because of sleepy drivers.
Mario Vaillancourt, with the SAAQ, says drowsy driving comes after many hours on the road, and is especially common during summer because of vacations.
For truck drivers, he says, fatigue can creep up suddenly.
"Your eyes are burning. You have trouble keeping your eyes open. Your reactions are slower," Vaillancourt told CJAD 800.
He says those symptoms can't be controlled by loud music or caffeine.
"You can not control fatigue even if your willpower, experience or motivation are high."
He says the only solution is to stop and to have a short 20 or 30 minute nap.
