This is breast cancer awareness month so let's debunk some myths about it.
Obesity does increase your risk of developing breast and other cancers. However once the diagnosis is made, eating sugar won’t make your cancer harder to eradicate. It's a myth that sugar will make your breast cancer cells grow faster.
Similarly, there is no proof of an association between artificial sweeteners and breast or any other human cancer. There is also no scientifically valid proof that the use of anti-deodorants or anti-perspirants; wearing an underwire or any sort of bra; or, having a breast implant, will cause breast cancer.
Breast cancer happens for a number of reasons many of which are completely out of our control. That’s why screening is so important. We're lucky that in Quebec there is an excellent screening program in place and we have a number of top notch breast cancer treatment centers. The key is to make certain that you are screened. If you yourself discover something that doesn't seem right, don't hesitate to have it examined. If it is cancer, it's much easier to handle if it’s caught early.
