West Island residents are being warned of a new scam that's going around towns.
The City of Dorval released a statement warning people of a company that has been calling or going door-to-door claiming it was mandated by the City to verify heating systems.
Once inside the salesperson insists they must be allowed access to your furnace.
The person then claims to have found a problem with the furnace or hot water tank and will aggressively try to sell the homeowner a new one.
"Please note that this is not true. The City has not requested any company whatsoever to verify any heating system, and this company is not authorized by the City of Dorval to make such solicitations."
Residents of other West Island cities have similar stories.
"They came to our door a few weeks ago. My wife answered and he tried to talk his way in. I was pretty aggressive with him because he was selling nonsense" one man from Kirkland told CJAD 800. "He kept waving what he called heating codes in my face, but I knew it was BS. It said US regulations on it. Looked like something he printed off of the internet."
Security was called but the self proclaimed heating system inspector took off before they arrived.
"We also looked up the company on the ID badge of the guy that came to the door and it doesn't exist" the resident said.
Pointe-Claire, Beaconsfield, Pierrefonds and Pincourt residents have been some of the many sharing their own encounters with what appears to be the same company, often with different names, over the past couple of months. There have also been reports of a similar scam previously making its way through the South Shore.
Officials are advising residents who are contacted by the company to call their local Public Security.
Similar scams were reported in Western Canada last summer.
