If you're thinking of getting a bunny or chick for someone this Easter, think twice, and inform yourself on the big decision you're about to make.
Every year about 250 rabbits are abandoned at the Montreal SPCA, the majority come in the months following this coming holiday weekend.
"Many of these rabbits end up abandoned in shelters, either because they were impulse buys or because their purchasers were unaware of the level of care these animals require" explained SPCA spokesperson Anita Kapuscinska.
Rabbits, like other exotic pets can be a handful, but with the proper knowledge can be extraordinary little companions.
To help counter the problem and demystify what it takes to care for a rabbit, the Montreal SPCA will be holding three special information workshops on Saturday, April 15.
"[We] will be offering free workshops for people to discover the ABC's of rabbit behaviour, as well as their special needs" Kapuscinska said. "You will learn what to expect when welcoming a rabbit into your home, and what types of activities you can offer him or her!"

The animal shelter also warns against giving ducklings and chicks as pets. The birds are very delicate, are easily injured and should not be handled, especially by children.
Rather than offering a loved one a live animal for Easter this year, you should stick with the stuffed kind, they're a lot cuddlier.
