The remnants of what used to be Équipe Denis Coderre will be called Mouvement Montréal from now on.
Interim party leader Lionel Perez announced the new name on Monday, and he insisted unlike so many other municipal political parties which are little more than vehicles for someone's mayoralty run, his party isn't going anywhere.
"I'm very confident that this party is here to stay," Perez says. "We have elected officials with experience, a renewal and we're well-established in our neighborhoods. We'll be there for the next election."
Perez was chosen as the interim leader of the party in the days following Denis Coderre's defeat in last month's mayoralty election. Perez says he won't seek the permanent leadership of the party when it chooses a new leader sometime between now and 2021, when the next election happens.
38 people were elected under the old Coderre banner on Nov. 5, including 24 councillors and 14 borough councillors.
The party says it has about 800 members, and now has a new Twitter handle: @MvtMtl.
