Denis Coderre is promising that if re-elected, he'll build a new sports complex in Lachine.
The incumbent Montreal mayor made the promise on the banks of the Lachine Canal flanked by his candidates in the borough and neighbouring boroughs, as well as his executive committee member responsible for sports.
Coderre said he had no specifics yet on location or budget but that it would mean an investment of around $50-million.
His candidates in Lachine said they'd like to see the complex built behind the Dalbé-Viau High School because of its central location. Sports teams and residents now share facilities with local schools.
Coderre said the complex - which would include double gymnasiums, a pool with 50m swim lanes and a wading pool - would be built before the end of the next mandate in 2021. Coderre said the complex could host international sports competitions.
Coderre said after investing in soccer complexes and other sports infrastructure in the east end of the city, he is now focusing on the west end, citing needs in LaSalle, Pierrefonds-Roxboro and L'Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève.
