It still wasn't clear what caused 14 passenger cars to derail in northern India overnight, killing more than 100 and injuring close to 200.
It happened near the industrial city of Kanpur, about 500 kilometres southeast of the capital New Delhi.
Rescue workers, soldiers and members of India's disaster management force were trying to reach survivors in the mangled cars, and the death toll was expected to rise.
Workers used torches to reach people inside derailed cars, and cranes were brought in to lift the coaches from the tracks.
But workers were moving cautiously as some cars are precariously tilted, creating a risk of tipping.
Medical teams are providing first aid near the site, while the more seriously injured are being moved to hospitals
Rail authorities have ordered an investigation into the incident.
