A new bylaw for the Plateau is described as a part of a revitalization of St Andre street.
The motion, adopted by Montreal’s executive committee on Wednesday night, will keep the street accessible to drivers, but cyclists and pedestrians will have priority in an effort to make the artery safer.
It keeps most of St. Andre open to motorists between Cherrier and Laurier, but motorists will be forced to turn off at various points.
"At a certain point, motorists will be invited to take turns, rather than carry on through, whereas cyclists will be able to carry on straight ahead. So, that will reduce the volume of traffic on the street, it will calm traffic on the street and there'll be clear indications cyclists have a priority", said city councillor Alex Norris, who spoke with CTV.
Norris added all of the water mains have to be redone, that there'll be a major construction project one way or the other so the city's taking advantage of that project to improve the street.
Similar motions had been put forth by the two previous administrations but were never adopted.
