It appears the province is putting the wheels in motion to begin taxing soft drinks and other sugary beverages.
The Journal de Montréal reports the government has set up a committee to study the possibility of instituting a tax on sugary drinks. The paper reports a 10-cent tax per litre would being an extra $80 million into the government's coffers.
The committee, set up by the health and social services ministry, is expected to come up with its recommendations next year.
Taxes on sugary beverages have been instituted in several American cities, including San Francisco, Oakland, Philadelphia and Albany, N.Y. The city of Chicago put a 1% sugary-drink tax in place in August of last year, but repealed it in October after the soft drink industry pushed back.
