Couche-Tard has ordered all of its retail outlets to remove the sugary and highly-alcoholized beverage called "FCKD UP" from its stores' shelves.
The decision comes after a 14-year-old teenager, Athena Gervais, went missing on Monday. The girl's body was found in a stream behind her Laval high school on Thursday.
Friends have told reporters that a group of them, including Gervais, went to a déppaneur near their school at lunch on Monday and allegedly stole a number of the drinks. Gervais is said to have been so intoxicated she was having trouble walking and had fallen down at least once.
“Although this product is perfectly legal for sale, acting responsibly is a way of doing things every day at Couche-Tard and that is why such a decision was made,” said Couche-Tard in a news release last night.
Laval police said an autopsy revealed that there were no signs of violence on her body and will await the results of a toxicology report before making further comments.
