After an investigation that ran for months, provincial police are refusing to say whether they'll be recommending charges against a sub-contractor hired to remove contaminated soil from a number of Montreal-area construction sites.
La Presse reports that the SQ's Operation Mothball tailed some of the trucks and discovered they did not take the soil to decontamination companies - they drove into rural areas surrounding Montreal and illegally dumped their loads, sometimes on farms.
Although the investigation hasn't yet led to charges, Quebec's environment minister and Montreal's mayor are expected to launch a pilot project today centering on computerized tracking of contaminated soil, to ensure that it ends up being decontaminated at an approved facility.
