Some major downtown thoroughfares will be closed starting next Monday to allow for construction work on the new McGill REM light-rail station.
Work is set to begin next week on a pedestrian walkway between the REM station and the existing McGill metro station, and that will mean car traffic will be reduced to just one lane on McGill College Ave. in the northbound direction between Ste. Catherine St. and De Maisonneuve Blvd. The closure is expected to continue into the spring.
Meanwhile, on De Maisonneuve, car traffic will be cut to one lane in the area, between McGill College and Robert-Bourassa Blvd., and the bike path will be diverted.
Work began in earnest on the McGill REM station last September.
The much talked-about light-rail network is currently set projected to cost $6.3 billion, and will link the north and south shores, and the airport, to downtown Montreal.
The first stations are slated to open in 2021, with the entire network set to be up and running by 2023.
