Concordia University is warning students and staff to be vigilant about unsolicited social media invitations and has issued a public safety alert.
The university says it is aware of at least two cases where women were lured off campus by fake Instagram offers of professional development opportunities.
These invitations allegedly resulted in drugging and sexual assault.
"It's very disturbing the information that we got. We were very concerned about student safety and we certainly don't want to see another episode or instance happen again," says Mary-Jo Barr, Director of Public Relations at Concordia.
Barr adds students need to be attentive on all social media platforms.
"Be careful with those interactions, because it may not be what it appears to be," she adds.
Complaints were filed with Montreal police and campus security last week.
Meanwhile, Concordia is advising students who need assistance to contact the university's Sexual Assault Resource Centre at 514-848-2424, ext. 3353
They can also reach out to Campus Security at 514-848-3717, option 1.
