You may soon be seeing Air Canada offering cheaper fares to certain cities as the airline carrier is getting ready to compete with new so-called ultralow-cost carriers.
Air Canada said it hasn't decided which selective flights would be offered at low fares or what other cities its low-cost Rouge network would service.
With ultralow-cost carriers from Canada Jetlines and Westjet taking off starting next year, Air Canada had to act, said aviation analyst Karl Moore.
"It seems that a lot of people in Canada and around the world are willing to go with very, very few frills if they get a great price. Price matters to a lot of people," said Moore in an interview with CJAD 800 News.
"Whether they can be profitable, these ultralow-cost carriers, is an open question."
Moore said ultralow-cost carriers often use planes with less legroom and charge extra for food, water or carry-on luggage.
