Over a thousand community organizations will suspend their activities in the coming days across the province in order to demand better funding.
A spokesman for the group Engagez-vous and its campaign says there is a direct link between the government's austerity policies and increased demand for aid from community organizations, which have difficulty in meeting the needs of more and more Quebecers.
According to Engagez-vous, subsidies for certain community groups have seen no indexing for several years and that 230 groups receive no funding at all.
The group is pushing for $475 million in community-level funding, saying the government has the means considering its recent budgetary surplus.
Demonstrations and other campaign events are planned for Wednesday in several regions of Quebec, including in Montreal.
