The city of Montreal's contentious pit bull ban is, for all intents and purposes, back in effect now, after the Quebec Court of Appeal on Thursday overturned a lower court ruling suspending the ban.
That means existing pit bulls and pit bull-type dogs are now subject to strict restrictions — among them, they'll have to be registered, sterilized, and muzzled in public.
Montreal is now off-limits to new pit bulls, and pit bull owners have until the end of this month to register their dogs with the city.
In October, a Superior Court judge ruled the pit bull bylaw was too vague — particularly when it came to defining what a "pit bull-type dog" was.
American Staffordshire terriers and Stafforshire bull terriers, among other breeds, would fall under that definition.
More to come.
