The Raichman Group has purchased the iconic Snowdon Theatre from the City of Montreal for $1.6 million. It will be developed into a largely residential building over the next several years.
However, much of the building's facade, including its well-known sign, will be preserved in the new development, since the Theatre has been designated a heritage property by the city's executive committee. That's according to City Councillor Marvin Rotrand, who represents Snowdon on council.
Rotrand told CTV he's pleased with the decision. "The city recognizes the building has a certain heritage value and, as such, the promoter will have to maintain the distinct envelope of the building, as well as its iconic sign
The art-deco building has sat empty since 2004, when it was purchased by the city. A decade later, it was briefly used as the home of a children's gymnastics program. In 2016, much of the building's interior was damaged beyond repair after three teenagers started a fire there.
