The Plante administration is getting ready to suspend the previous administration's controversial breed-specific legislation.
Councillor Craig Sauvé says bylaw 16-060, which concerns so-called 'pitbull-type dogs', will be done away with at a meeting of the city's Executive Committee on Dec. 20.
Regulations for dangerous dogs, regardless of breed, would stay in place, and the city would issue a single type of licence to dog owners.
Doing away with the Coderre administration's pitbull rules was one of Valerie Plante's major campaign promises.
Sauvé says the Plante administration will continue to improve animal control rules. A new bylaw is expected to be presented to city council in the new year.
"The Montreal SPCA welcomes this news, and is looking forward to assisting the new administration with the development of effective and fair measures to address the issue of dog bites," the group said in a statement. "We are also looking forward to working with the City to develop a new, progressive by-law that addresses companion animal overpopulation and ensures welfare of all animals in our community."
