Montreal mayor Denis Coderre is taking aim at a Riviere des Prairies company that recycles animal carcasses.
Residents have long complained of the smell in the air and animal waste spilling from trucks belonging to Sanimax onto the streets.
The mayor says the city will seek injunctions, forcing Sanimax to upgrade its air-filtration equipment. One outlines a potential zoning bylaw, the second focuses on the smell in the air near the plant.
Coderre acknowledges that jobs at the plant need to be taken into consideration but he also stresses quality of life for residents needs to be respected. He feels the injunctions are the best way to preserve the jobs of the estimated 350 Sanimax employees.
