The city of Montreal has launched a new snow removal operation to pick up the 14 centimetres of snow that fell over the weekend.
This, despite the fact another system is expected to bring another 10-15 centimetres of snow on Wednesday, and still more snow in the forecast for this coming weekend.
This operation began in the Plateau Mont-Royal borough early Monday morning, and other boroughs are expected to begin their operations on Monday evening.
The city usually budgets around $160 million for snow removal every year — which usually covers about five major snow removal operations per year.
The current operation is the sixth — meaning the city is on track to blow its snow-removal budget for the entire year.
Several snow dumps in the city are over capacity, and the city has already asked for permission to dump snow at the location of the former Blue Bonnets racetrack.
So far, this has been a much snowier-than-usual winter, surpassing the average by about 50 centimetres at this point.
