The municipal opposition called on Mayor Valérie Plante's administration to use money repaid to Montreal by companies that defrauded the city towards reducing property tax hikes.
Lionel Perez, who leads the group of councillors who were elected under the Équipe Denis Coderre banner in last year's election, says he also thinks Mayor Plante should reveal how much money the city has recovered under a voluntary repayment program that concluded two months ago.
SNC-Lavalin, Cima+, Dessau and Construction Frank Catania have all publicly confirmed that they participated in the program, which ran from 2015 to December of last year. However, other companies chose to participate confidentially.
Perez said he found it "hard to believe it's not at least $50 million."
The Plante Administration plans to absorb all money that was recovered under the program back into the city's budget.
