Even as MNA's were passing a motion discouraging store clerks from using the phrase "bonjour-hi" when greeting customers, in Montreal Anjou borough mayor Luis Miranda was tabling a motion at city hall calling for a debate on making the tie for men, "a personal choice, rather than an unwritten rule".
The motion was accepted and time has been set aside for a debate on the issue December 11.
The Journal de Montreal says there is no dress code at Montreal city hall, but there is an unwritten rule that requires men to wear a jacket and tie.
Four years ago Projet Montréal councillor Alex Norris was threatened with expulsion from council when he showed for work without a jacket.
