The City of Montreal is looking at banning oil furnaces, this after they've already banned residential wood burning stoves in 2018.
They plan to switch their own official municipal buildings from those types of furnaces to natural gas by 2021.
This according to a report by La Presse.
It says the city is evaluating ways to encourage Montrealers to switch to other modes of heating.
There's no set date for when residents may be forced to make the switch, as the city is looking further into the issue.
However, the city has already been encouraging people to switch off oil furnaces.
La Presse reports that residents who already switched from oil furnaces to other modes of heating caused a major decline in green house gas emissions in Montreal.
The Quebec government is already offering a program which gives grants between $875 and $1,275 for those looking to get rid of their oil furnaces.
They've extended the program to 2021.
2440 Montreal buildings have benefited from that program between 2009-2016.
