There are indications that the new Champlain Bridge may not be delivered on time or on budget.
The Journal de Montreal says the consortium of engineering and construction companies working on the project, Signature On The Saint-Lawrence (SSL) is currently in negotiations with the federal government to set a new delivery date and a new budget for the project.
The original contract calls for the bridge to be ready by December, but the consortium claims that changes forced upon it by both the Quebec and federal governments to transport heavy steel beams and other components to the construction site by barge instead of by road caused delays that has set back the delivery date.
The original contract calls for penalties of up to $150 million dollars.
SSL is also reportedly claiming $124 million in damages caused by the delays.
