Some McGill University workers are off the job.
Casual support workers began a 5-day strike this weekend.
Among other things, they want a better salary.
The minimum wage right now for casual workers is $10.85 an hour, but union members want $15 an hour.
“The employer is not taking us seriously. We have no other choice but to launch a strike this morning. Unfortunately, this will disrupt all activities planned this weekend, including the beginning of the term, the open house and the Alouettes football game,” said AMUSE union president Claire Michela in a written statement.
Casual support staff have been without a contract for a year and a half.
In a statement, McGill University said it has a contingency plan aimed at keeping the strike's impact on university activities to a minimum, adding essential services shouldn't be affected.
It also said picket lines shouldn't interfere with campus activities.
