A 52-year-man has died following a residential blaze on the South Shore overnight.
The flames broke out in the basement of an apartment building on Montpetit Street near Roland-Therrien Blvd. in Longueuil.
The more than dozen firefighters on scene managed to keep the fire under control before it spread to the rest of the building.
Emergency crews found the victim in the basement apartment, unconscious. He was rushed to hospital where his death was later confirmed.
The exact cause is not yet known but early indications have linked the fire to careless smoking.
