A lot can happen in 100 years; however a new NHL franchise winning five of its first six games is not one of those things.
On Tuesday night the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Buffalo Sabres 5-4 in overtime. With the win the Golden Knights now find themselves sitting atop the Western Conference with 10 points and a 5-1-0 record.
While it may not seem significant, only one other NHL franchise has ever started its first season on this type of hot streak, the 1917-18 Montreal Canadiens, during the inaugural NHL season.
The club technically started the season 5-1, losing their seventh game to the Toronto Hockey Club 6-4. However, the club's fourth win of the season came via a forfeit because the Montreal Arena, known as Westmount Arena and home of the Montreal Wanderers burned down on January 2, 1918.
This forced the Wanderers to default scheduled games against the Canadiens and Toronto. In the standings the games appear as wins for the Habs and Toronto, but the games were never played.
As for the modern day Canadiens, they continue to find themselves on a losing streak that extends back to the previous millennium.
On Tuesday night the Habs fell 5-2 to the San Jose Sharks. Jonathan Drouin and Shea Weber scored for the Canadiens while Carey Price stopped 31 of 35 shots. It was not enough though, with the club now winless since an opening night victory against the Buffalo Sabres.
San Jose has not been kind to the Canadiens.
The last time the Montreal Canadiens won a game in San Jose was November 23, 1999. You have to jump back two years earlier, to November 1997 to find the last time the Habs beat the Sharks in regulation in California.
