The secretary general of NATO says Canada must be vigilant about the threat of Russian cyber-warfare both on the battlefield and at home.
Jens Stoltenberg says Russia is believed to be behind a digital disinformation campaign aimed at undermining the Canada-led multinational NATO battle group in Latvia.
Stoltenberg says social media accounts with ties to Russia are spreading false or misleading stories about Canadian troops.
He says Russia has used similar tactics to try to influence the electoral process in several Western countries, but refrained from speculation about whether Canada would be next.
Stoltenberg says Canadians should be on guard for online propaganda, because public awareness is the best defences against cyberthreats.
He says all NATO members should be beefing up their cybersecurity protocols in an age where global threats know no borders.
